In 2026, as Cape May celebrates the 175th anniversary of the City, the 50th anniversary of Cape May as a National Historic Landmark, and the 250th anniversary of America, the city is inviting residents and visitors alike to take part in a meaningful and memorable project—creating a community time capsule that captures this moment in history.

The time capsule, which is planned to be opened in either 25 or 50 years, will serve as a snapshot of Cape May in 2026—its people, culture, businesses, and everyday life during this special anniversary year.

Community members are encouraged to contribute items that reflect life in Cape May today. Submissions can be dropped off at the City Manager’s Office at Cape May City Hall, offering everyone a chance to leave their mark on the future. Whether it’s photographs, letters, memorabilia, or small keepsakes, each item will help tell the story of Cape May for generations to come.

Before the capsule is officially sealed, all collected items will be put on display at the City Council table, giving the public an opportunity to view and celebrate the contributions. The display will include a special closing event, marking the final step before the time capsule is sealed and preserved.

This unique initiative not only honors Cape May’s rich history but also looks ahead—creating a bridge between today’s community and those who will call Cape May home decades from now.

Stay tuned for more details on submission deadlines and the official sealing celebration as Cape May continues to commemorate its historic anniversaries in unforgettable ways.
